Previously in Adelaide

25 April 2008:
Today is Anzac Day, the day which commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in Turkey in World War I. The battles in Turkey claimed the lives of over 10000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers. Nowadays the 25th of April is a public holiday, probably the only public holiday on which Aussies don't have a barby and get drunk but attend memorial services throughout the country.

21 April 2008:
Last weekend was the 2020 summit in Canberra. This was a summit hosted by prime minister Kevin Rudd for which 1000 Australians were invited. They were allocated into 10 different fields of expertise and had to come up with ideas for the government on how to improve Australia by the year 2020. I wonder what results will come from this...

7 April 2008:
Last weekend daylight saving time ended. This was a week later than in previous years. The start of wintertime in SA had to change to be in conjunction with the start of winter time in the Eastern states of Australia and to minimise the economic losses due to the extra time difference. Some computers and phones got a bit confused though last week. I enjoyed an extra hour of sleep this weekend.

Previously in Adelaide

14 March 2008:
At the moment Adelaide is experiencing its longest heatwave ever. We already had 12 consecutive days of 35 degrees or more and at least another 4 days of 35+ are expected. Bad news for the everlasting drought (in contrast to some Eastern parts of Australia that keep flooding) and hard work for the firefighters.

Day trips

I just finished uploading some more photos. This time there are photos from several day trips that I made during spring last year (August - October).

There are some photos from the Adelaide City Botanic Gardens during the time that the whole city was full of flowering bottlebrush trees.

There are also some photos from a road trip that Mathilde and I made in her new car. We drove all over the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide. We tried to spot some whales in Port Elliot, visited Victor Harbor and Granite Island and drove through Deep Creek National Park. Definitely worth going back there!

I also uploaded a few photos from the Moon Lantern Festival. This is an important Chinese festival that is also celebrated in Adelaide. A great atmosphere; all those people from different cultural backgrounds together on a warm spring night, having a picknick on the banks of the River Torrens and enjoying the performances and the numerous lanterns.

Then there are a few photos of our trip to Port Adelaide, the old harbour of Adelaide. It was a very windy day and we had some difficulties keeping our hair out of our faces for the photos when we climbed the lighthouse. We also did a dolphin watching cruise here and saw plenty of dolphins in the Port River.

Finally, we visited the other Botanic Gardens that Adelaide has: the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. They are just outside of Adelaide in the hills and are massive. Very beautiful though! We were there in the time that the rhododendrons flower and that resulted in some spectacular colours in the forest!

Next time I'll have some more photos from my trip to Western Australia and after that; there is still plenty more to come... stay tuned!
